Chattooga River Trail - Highway 28 to Licklog Creek Falls and Pigpen Falls

Today's hike was on the Chattooga River Trail hiking from the Highway 28 bridge(SC side) to Licklog Creek and Pigpen Falls and back. 8.4 mi. round trip

Directions

The Highway 28 (Russell) Bridge is located on SC highway 28 between Walhalla, SC and Highlands, NC. The Chattooga River is the border river of GA/SC. From Clayton, GA take Warwoman Road and drive to the intersection of Highway 28 and turn right and go to the SC side of the 28 bridge and the parking lot is on the left. Approx. 14-15 miles from Clayton. Another great day for a hike! Hiking distance - 8.4 miles. WILD

Cloudy and cool with some brief sprinkles - temperatures ranging from 55 to 62 degrees F.

Small Bellwort, Robin's Plantain, Wood Sorrel, Pussey Toes, Toad-shade Trillium (both purple and yellow), Catesby's Trillium, Wood Anemone, Rue Anemone, Sweet White Violets, Halberd Leaf Violet, Cinqufoil, Dwarf Iris Verna, Jack-in-the-Pulpit and Purple Violets

BLACK AND WHITE WARBLER, EASTERN TOWHEE, CHIPPING SPARROW, WHITE THROATED SPARROW, DARK EYED JUNCO, CAROLINA WREN, VIREO, TUFTED TITMOUSE, CAROLINA CHICKADEE, PILEATED WOODPECKER

  • Early into the hike, we pass by this nice little waterfall.

  • There are many great primitive campsites along the river.
  • The Chattooga River is a Federally designated "Wild and Scenic River".
